Ironhack
What Makes Ironhack Coding Bootcamp Unique?
Ironhack was founded in 2013 by Wharton and Harvard grads. Since then, it has helped over 9,000 career changers and entrepreneurs, otherwise known as Ironhackers, launch rewarding careers in tech.
We speak to Nevean Khalil, an instructional designer at Ironhack, to gain a deeper understanding of what makes this coding bootcamp stand out from the crowd.
Ironhack’s Programs Are Designed with Modern Learners in Mind
Nevean believes the best way to describe Ironhack’s central methodology is “learning by doing”. She says, “We design our learning experiences considering that adults need to understand the immediate impact [of] what their learning can have on their personal and professional lives.”
The school also understands the importance of learning how to learn again as an adult. Therefore, on top of equipping students with the necessary skill set, it also helps them unblock the mental barrier they often have during their transition and upskilling.
Teaching assistants (TAs) and lead instructors are available during and in between live Zoom sessions to offer relevant assistance. These connections also remind students that they are a part of a bigger, supportive community.
“When participants enroll into our bootcamps, they are often changing careers and embarking on a major transition in their lives. Many of Ironhack staff have already taken that leap and so they understand the journey that the students are on,” says Nevean.
Ironhack staffers are learners at heart and this is key to staying connected and relevant. With their examples of successful transitions, they act as role models for students who are going through similar experiences. This, in turn, creates a culture of learning among Ironhack students, graduates, and staff.
Ironhack’s Robust Career Services
Ironhack’s number one mission is to help students achieve great outcomes, which is evident in its high graduation and job placement rates.
Based on its independently-audited Outcomes Report, 96 percent of Ironhackers across all programs and campuses successfully graduated in the first half of 2019. In the same period, 76 percent of them found a job within 90 days of graduation while 89 percent were employed within 180 days of graduation.
One of the key contributors to these positive outcomes is Ironhack’s career services, also known as Careerhack. It is described as “a program designed to help students identify their ideal outcome and support them throughout the process so they reach it as fast as possible”.
Ironhackers take on the Careerhack program in tandem with their technical curriculum. This simultaneously exposes them to the “job” aspect of education during the skill-building stage. It is divided into three main sections and delivered at different points of the bootcamp:
- Stage 0 – Discovery
- Stage 1 – Digital Foundations
- Stage 2 – Job Hunting
Ironhackers also get personal job support from a professional Career Coach who helps and guides them toward achieving their professional goals, whether it is landing a job or advancing their careers.
The school has a network of over 600 hiring partners that graduates can take advantage of. It has previously launched multiple initiatives with companies like Facebook, Google, Uber, EA Sports, Vinted, Bunq, and many more.
Ironhack Increases Access to Tech Education through Various Financing Option

“We stay active with the alumni community because we want to uphold one of our values, which is to love people and their stories. For us, that means following through on the journey,” Nevean says.
Being an Ironhack graduate comes with its own perks like lifetime access to the school’s webinars and courses that can support their career growth. Graduates also get to meet and connect with peers through community events like Ironbeers and more.
What Can I Learn at Ironhack?
Ironhack instructors offer learners real-world insights into their specialized field. The curriculum is based on key projects that require industry-specific skills. “Our learners aren’t just passively learning concepts but they are applying them right away, ” says Nevean. Ironhack challenges its students to work with others, emulating real-world, technical project collaboration.
Its cohort-based learning offers participants the support and community they need when transitioning and growing in tech. “As an instructional designer who has seen several kinds of curriculum from different institutions, what sets Ironhack apart is that our educational practice is evolving through the student experience,” highlights Nevean.
The school’s learning experience is an accumulation of several teams at Ironhack rooting for each participant to further their careers and livelihoods. This approach makes Ironhack’s learning experience full of real-life moments.
Students should also be glad to know that Ironhack’s curriculum is constantly updated to match industry trends. “We don’t restrict ourselves to a stagnant curriculum but rather we advocate for our teachers and experts to constantly grow as each vertical grows, offering creative license coupled with a constant exchange of ideas and knowledge,” says Nevean.
